Secrets… (The life of Vivian Mayer)

finding_vivian_maier_film

Last year I found the work of Vivian Mayer and I instantly loved her and the mistery around her life. She was a nanny and a photographer but never showed her work to anyone. She was “discovered” by this man who bought a box of her negatives and undeveloped films. He was so amazed by this discovery that he just had to find out more about her and show her work to the world.

I think it is very interesting to find people like Vivian, who do what they like just for themselves, without a need for attention and/or “likes”. I’m not sure she’d be so happy with this intrusion into this aspect of her life -that she kept so private-, but at least we get to enjoy her work and maybe learn to not to be fooled by instant celebrity and media hype.

then we take Berlin…

Alt-Berlin

This post is dedicated to one of the most amazing cities in the world: Berlin. I’m not sure what I expected when I first arrived but I can say that I was surprised! To me, Berlin is a city that is alive. There’s room for everyone and everything, and there is the old and the new, bright colours, graffitti, punks, trans, bikes, beer and a sense of freedom and respect for others and their beliefs.

Berlin is the city where things are happening and I hope I can go back again and stay a little longer because there is so much to see.

These photos were taken with motion picture film, in this case Kodak Vision 500tT, and my (baby) Canon AE-1. They are not manipulated in any way, just scanned.

Last year I found great short films and became addicted to Short of the Week so now I’ve decided to “honour” the shortest month of the year by watching a short film a day. If you’d like to join me, you can find the films available online in Short of the Week.

February 2013!

Feb2013

I can’t believe how January is almost over! There are sooo many things I want to do this year and I’ll be soon starting some exciting new projects.

So far, I’ve kept busy! I appeared in Megan’s Portrait Challenge and completed the first of my “At least 1 roll of film a month” idea for this year. Since February is the shortest month, I liked the “theme” and came up with a new challenge “28 Days, 28 Short Films” I made a list of 28 short films that I’ll be watching, one a day, starting this Friday. You are all invited to join me, I’ll be giving more details in another post.

In the meantime, you can download my February calendar here.

P.S: I’ve noticed some downloads already. I’m curious to know how you’re using the calendars!!

Around the Web!

Getting Ready!

I think this might become a regular! There are many great things going on out there so I’ll be recommending things that I find interesting.

Buenos Aires in Tungsten!

cielo Tungsten

This is my first ever roll of Lomography Tungsten film! I started it around two months ago and finished it last week, I know! I wanted to use it in situations in which it could bring the best results – those purple pinkish hues- and I didn’t think it would be so good for more “serious” photography. I like how it turned out but I’m not crazy about it, I think I need more practice.

The Versatile Blogger Award

versatileblogger11

I was surprised yesterday when I got the news that I was nominated for The Versatile Blogger Award by Dorothy DeerestStop by for DIY projects, recipes and creative ideas. Thank you so much Megan!

  • Announce your win with a post and link to whoever presented your award
  • Present 15 awards to deserving bloggers
  • Drop them a comment to tip them off after you’ve linked them in the post
  • Post 7 interesting things about yourself

Here is my list of nominated blogs:

Cool Girls Shoot Film

Angie Muldowney

Conor Cullen

Shadowhouse Creations

The Coffeeshop Blog

Le monde esthetique (in Spanish)

The Black Cat Photography (in Spanish)

City of Blackbirds

Kairit S

Subodh Shetty Photography Blog

The Reel Photo

Only the Cinema

I know they are not 15, but these are the ones I can recommend as a reader. Now  those of you who have already been nominated or are just not interested, that’s ok too!

And now, 7 things about myself:

1-I’m a Gryffindor, I don’t like Slytherins.

2- I’m a translator and I work in subtitling of  TV shows from English and Portuguese into Spanish. I am still excited when I see one of the shows with my translation is on!

3-I still send postcards!

4- I love film photography! I have a small collection of cameras and I like trying  any kind of film I can find just to see what happens.

5- I’ve stayed up all night just to finish a  book -not just once- because I literally couldn’t put it down.

6- I honestly believe that you can be a Joy Division fan and still be a happy person. Different people may have different views on what “happy” is and that is perfectly ok.

7- I try not to take myself too seriously.

I guess that’s all for now. Again, thanks so much Megan!
